Pine Creek Watershed Assessment
In partnership with the North Area Environmental Council, this assessment encompassed
the 67.3 square-mile Pine Creek Watershed in northern Allegheny County and included
14 municipalities. While the downstream communities are primarily developed, the
headwaters are being changed rapidly to commercial and suburban development. Also,
many of these communities are under a consent order by the Environmental Protection
Agency to address both stormwater management and sewer overflows in the watershed.
This partnership planning effort directly engaged municipal officials and staff, local sportsmen,
and citizen volunteers with the Allegheny/Butler Counties Vintage Senior Environmental Corps
to develop a comprehensive plan that focused on the health of the watershed in the long term
and provided common ground for effective and efficient communication among all stakeholders and the public.
